I suspect very few people earth portable generators. It's instructive that they say to earth it in accordance with electric codes. I don't know that there is any requirement to earth a portable generator for temporary standalone use in the electric code, so this big warning may well boil down to requiring nothing.
I also tend to treat some of the statements in the manual with a grain of salt when it recommends changing the engine oil of a two-stroke engine every 20 hours and adjusting the valve clearance of what would seem to be a reed valve every 300 hours. It is nice to know that it can power one camping, one tailgating, or ten sixty watt light bulbs (but not simultaneously).
