No the recoil starter has four bolts that go a certain way.

I tried that carb prime method of getting started and I still flooded the thing. Have to remove spark plug and pull a few times to air it out (and wipe off the plug) like it says in the manual--replace plug and pull a few times and then it fires right up. 40F out. I hope this will get better when the SeaFoam is all used up in there.
I know about starting the gen first then add the load and VV, but this problem of running out of gas so it stops with the load still going is a new one on me. Also they say if you slightly overload the watts rating it might not pop the circuit breaker but it can add wear to the generator. I don't know from my K a W tests with the Vector if it was pushing the envelope that way or not. ( It ran the Vector ok and the gen sounded like it was running well, but the gen's output voltage fell to 99v remember)
