Accuracy is not hard to check. Put the thermometer sensor (properly wrapped as needed) in a bowl of ice water. It should read 32 degrees F or 0 degrees C.
By and large digital temperature sensors are quite accurate. A digital thermometer that is off by a couple of degrees is in the same category as a digital watch that loses fifteen seconds a day--you'll probably never encounter one.
EDIT: I guess apparently some of the accurite thermometers are surprisingly inaccurate. That's rather odd. Temperature sensors with manufacturer guaranteed accuracies of a couple of degrees worse case (and a fraction of a degree typically) are inexpensive commodity items.
