a reply from an LI battery maker

Hi,

I can't find the original thread--but here is what I received today:

Hi Don,

A 12v pack is four cells = $2,035/ea + hazmat shipping. Two parallel packs gives you the same capacity with more connections and a higher BMS cost.

Subject: 400 amp-hour 12 volt LI battery pack

Hi,

I'm interested in a "house" battery bank for my RV with a battery management system.

I'm locked into nominal 12 volt as I have a Magnum 3000 watt inverter.

What temperature range can these packs be stored at? (It gets to -40 here). What temperature can they be recharged at?

What would be the cost for a 400 amp-hour 12 volt bank?

Would I be better to have twin 200 amp-hour banks (weight and size considerations)?

My current bank is 875 amp-hours of lead acid.

Thanks in advance.

  • how much is hazmat shipping? I checked on 30% H2O2 once and the shipping was much more than the cost of the item.
    bumpy
  • Hi Jim,

I think the price includes the BMS. Too rich for my blood. I'm going AGM.
  • When Reed talks about his batteries it sure sounds enticing but yeesh, two grand for 400 Ah's. How much is the BMS?
  • Hi GordonThree,

No plan for LI for me--I need to be able to recharge well below freezing--as low a -40.

Having two banks means being able to use one while recharging the other. It is a strategy to get to 100% state of charge when using lead acid chemistries. I'm pretty certain I'm going AGM so this is needful.
  • Why would parallel packs give the same capacity?

2 grand plus shipping will buy you several rounds of replacement lead batteries. OUCH

Have you written to Magnum, asking if they'll do a custom firmware for your inverter to match the charge profile for a lithium pack, or is the plan just to feed ~17 volts (4.3 volts per cell, four cells?) into the BMS and let it handle the fussy work?
