A/C issue

I'm having an issue with one of my Coleman rooftop A/C's. The A/C was installed about a year ago because my original A/C was damaged beyond repair by hail.

It looks like there is a foam board between the air intake and the side where the air blows into the vents and ducts. I've noticed when I have the air vents in the a/c closed (to push more air to the ducts) that this board will blow into the air intake side of the a/c. I have to take the air filter cover off to see this happen. The first time this happened it caused my a/c to freeze up. When I took the air filter cover off I saw the board laying down on that side of the a/c. I pushed it back to the middle and it was running fine again. The problem is I constantly have to push the board back up to keep air flow working as expected...especially when I close some of the main a/c vents to get more airflow into the ducts.

Has anyone else had this issue? I was thinking about rigging something on the inside walls of the a/c to keep the board from moving. Anyone have any better ideas?
  • Thanks for the replies. I'll use the foil duct tape because even when I put the board in place I can feel a decent amount of cold air re-circulating into the intake side. Appreciate it guys.
  • Use foil duct tape to secure it. With the unit running, you should not have any cold air recirculating.
The installer should have done this.

Yes there is a foam board.. It may have been installed backwards or it may be that it was cut a bit small.. If you are having a problem you might take a bit of 1x3 or lath and put "Behind" (on the intake side) of the thing to keep it in place.
  • I have seen this issue before. You'll need to "re-engineer" the divider to keep it in place.

Without seeing it I'm guessing but, cut you some 3/4 angle or 3/4 x 3/4 wood material the length of the roof thickness and screw it to either side of the opening. Clean it good and seal all the cracks with aluminium duck tape.

It's a simple fix but you may need to remove the AC to get at it.
