AC reset / delay.....is this normal?

Hi all,

I've got a 2006 Four Winds 31P Class C RV (...along with a 2008 of the same model). I've been seeing an issue with my rooftop AC unit and I'm not sure if it is a problem or if it is simply the proper operation of the AC. When connected to shore power or with the generator running, if I go to the thermostat controls and turn on my AC it will turn on fine as expected. But if I turn it off at the thermostat switch (or if I slide the temperature control to a temperature that is higher than room temperature to turn the AC off) it turns off and then it won't turn back on for a couple minutes (3-5 minutes) if I use the controls (or temperature setting) to turn it back on. Should I be able to turn the AC on-off-on-off-on-off with just a few seconds in between? Or is it by design that there is some sort of reset/delay that makes it so it has to wait a few minutes for some AC mechanical reason?

I don't have the exact model/etc handy at the moment (sorry), but I'm guessing my roof AC is very similar to many of yours if you've got a Class C 10-15yr old RV. I know my thermostat control panel is a Coleman Mach.

I had a similar post recently about swapping the thermostat controls, but now I'm wondering if this AC reset/delay is actually how the unit is supposed to operate in general.

I appreciate your time and reply!

Regards,
Chris

Not all have this feature.. but.. THEY SHOULD.

It takes at least 3 minutes for the compressor to blead down and so you get a normal start. Trying to "Hot start" the compressor (Re-start it with a full head of pressure) will cause a locked rotor, very high current and thermal overheat/overload. This is not good for the compressor.

THis is one of the two reasons when, if you have a Generator. You turn off SHORE POWER for THREE FULL MINTUES before starting the genny, and stop the Genny THREE FULL MINUTES before restoring shore power. DO NOT HOT SWITCH.
  • very common and for protection of the AC. BTW your house AC unit or portable AC unit will do the same. Give the compressor time for the pressure to bleed down so the motor can restart w/o a huge load.

Delay varies, but usually is 2-5 minutes or so.

My Dometic Penguin II has about a 2 minute delay.
