Most of the time I get little charging if any from the alternator. The voltage of the jars is higher than the starter battery--so my solar system sends current to the engine.
I'm set up with dual charging paths with #8 wire.
My alternator is the stock 130 amp--so there is little or no risk of the chassis sending too much to the battery bank. My maximum safe charging rate is 108 amps--far more than the alternator can possibly send after it supplies 30 amps to the running of the engine, etc.
If I run the water heater--then I get quite a bit of charge going to the "house". I have seen 70 amps (meter tops out at 70)
I do plan on getting an AGM starter battery.
