I would do exactly as you're suggesting if I had a TV set up that way. Your thinking is sound.
One additional advantage is that you won't lose the DVD playback position or station search memories or other such things when swapping cables. (You might not anyhow, depending on the design of the TV, but you certainly won't when you don't have to disconnect the power.)
