I have banked a pair of 6s with a pair of 12s in some of my set-ups, with no problems. Main thing is that the 12s and 6s need to be in similar "condition" so one pair does not ruin the other pair if banked for a long period.
If the new MH's 12s are older, IMO consider them to be not right for matching with a new pair of any type of battery. Or you can get a pair of used Interstate Econo Power 12s for half price of new ones, and bank the four until they are all run down, and then buy four new batteries of whichever type you prefer.
In all cases where physically possible, put the load and charging wires across the whole bank of four. Try not to have a "downstream" pair or individual battery.
