This is what I did on a 12 volt system.
Our mh had 1-12 vlot battery maybe 2 years old. I added 1-12 volt battery but put a switch on each battery, then only used 1 battery at a time. I alternated them using one at a time for a day, when we were dry camping, and switched them each morning. We didn't have a generator, and they would last about half a week. So in the middle of the week I would turn them both on and we go sight seeing with the mh to charge them up for the last half of the week.
We did this for several years.
curious. Why wouldn't it be ok to discharge them together if it's ok to charge them together? It would seem like it would be difficult to have them at exactly or close to the same discharge when connecting them together. Amp hours out is amp hours out, if it comes from one at a time or from both at the same time. They would probably actually perform a little better if running together and facing Mr Peukert, especially if inverting was utilized.
