A&E OneStep power awning motor problems

My power awning has some kind of bind in the power mechanism. All the hardware struts are fine, not twisted, bent or otherwise a problem. They all move freely. But either the motor or the tube or whatever is inside the tube is binding. The motor acts like it has no power. I push extend and it weakly goes out a little then slows to a stop. If I wait a little it will sometimes go out a little further. It will retract a little easier but still not right. I found the motor leads and bypassed the controller. With a strong battery it did do better but still moved very slowly, not at all like it would when it was working. So I don't think it's the controller or wiring. It is either the motor or the tube. So two questions. First, what is inside these awning tubes? If I figure out how to remove the motor, is there some spring inside that's going to slap me in the face? Second, does anyone know how this motor is removed? It has a Chinese puzzle assortment of screws that seem interlocked with other parts. If I could get it off I think I could verify which part is wrong. If anyone has other suggestions, they are more than welcomed.
  • Thank you. I wonder though if there are two types of A&E awnings. My motor is not in the tube but outside at the top of the awning arm. I've seen some that seem to be inside the roller but this one sticks out beyond the roller ove the right arm.
  • Knowing the model of your awning would help, but mine had 3 pop rivets I drilled out, unhook power after removing the cover on inside of arm. Support the main roller tube assembly and motor assembly will pull out fairly easy. Important note on re-install: When motor drive assembly is properly aligned, it is placed in the roller tube with the motor slot positioned under the channel
with the fabric rope. I would take a few pics to reference but it is not a bad job to replace. The torsion spring is on the other end and that can get you if you disassemble without pinning that end. Just be able to support your awning/tube assembly with a ladder to rest it on while you have the motor out and removed from awning arm.
  • Doug, do you know how this motor comes off. The heads of bolts seem hidden behind other parts. It's strange.
  • Where can you get a motor? Thus far I've been unable to find one on the internet. What is the brake? Maybe that's hanging up.

There is indeed something in the motor assembly that CAN cause that.. But the odds are you have a bad connection.

I believe you will find a flat-2 connector (like a flat-4 Trailer connector but only two pins) in the arm near the motor.. You should have a matching cable in your owner's manual bag... Use it to feed a good 12 volts to the motor and see if that helps. if it does your problem is up-stream electrical, happy tracing.

If not.. the electric brake may have failed.. This can happen. And a new motor is.... Expensive (like 400 dollars).
  • Nothing in the tube will cause your problem. You have a weak motor. Running a good 12 volt source direct to the motor is exactly what you do to verify a weak motor. The motor/asbly comes as a complete unit. Doug
