12lb AGM isn't much, then another 5-8lb panel, then another 20-40lb of all other gear and food. When it's on your back, every ounce matters. Batteries are not just heavy, but also bulky and not an optimal shape for carrying on your back. I wouldn't want to carry 24lb of 2*18AH, with all other gear. In fact, wouldn't want to carry more than 10lb total ;)
Lithiums time (for solar) probably hasn't come yet. Not only because of the price. Controller for lithiums has to have all the setpoints fully adjustable (with Float disabled), and for this particular application it has to be small, weatherproof and with temp sensor - don't know if there is any model that fits all these requirements.
