Lithiums time (for solar) probably hasn't come yet. Not only because of the price. Controller for lithiums has to have all the setpoints fully adjustable (with Float disabled), and for this particular application it has to be small, weatherproof and with temp sensor - don't know if there is any model that fits all these requirements.
Even though he's sledding, you're right, it is weight. It's difficult to figure the logistics since we don't know what type of terrain or ground/snow pack and for how much distance, preference, etc.
