Air bags and tire ware

I have a 2012 Ford F-350 SRW. My rear tires seem to have a cupping issue which when rotated to the front cause a vibration in the steering. I was told that if I install air bags this would r Duce the bounce which is causing the cupping. Is this true? If so what brands of air bags are recommended? What is the avg cost? What are the pros and cons of having air bags on the truck?

  • Without photos it's hard to tell but I'm wondering if you have broken belts in the two tires. Jack the tires off the ground and give them a spin and see if they are out of round and make sure the tread is running true. If that's not the problem and before you throw a lot of money at take the truck into a shop and have a good 4 wheel alignment done. If that all checks out replace the tires because they will never get any better along with the rear shocks, I would do all for.

Are both tires cupped? Sounds like you have a tire out of balance causing a vibration... have them re-balanced. A lot cheaper than air bags that you may not need to carry the weight of your TH. Do you reduce the air pressure once you get to your new workcamper position?
  • I'd guess balancing or bad shocks is causing your problem. Airbags won't help. Make sure the tires are inflated to the load they're carrying. The only other thing I can think of is an alignment issue, or worse case, and I really doubt it, the rear axle might not be square on the springs. I think if the axle got damaged somehow you'd have more problems than cupped tires.
  • air bags won't reduce bounce. I doubt bounce is your problem anyway. I would guess that your inflation pressure is wrong for the load you're carrying. Check out a tire load inflation chart for your tires and compare that to the scale weight of your rear axle.
  • Air bags might result in rougher ride while empty. I would highly recommend at least checking on Torklift Stable loads. Depending on your make/model they make a quick disconnect model that gives a stock ride empty, engaged when hauling.

What pressure are you running when empty?
  • People have different definitions of "cupping". Is this what you are referring to?

If so I don't think air bags would help. Air bags are simply for load leveling when towing heavy loads.

Cupping is generally the result of an unbalanced or out of round tire that has been hopping along for some time causing uneven wear. You need to find what is causing the hopping and address that rather than a band aid approach. If the cupping is that bad then you'll likely need to replace the affected tires as they will never be round again.
