Yes, you have to have some sort of rig that can take advantage of the (not very much) battery/inverter/solar equipment needed for longer times off-grid. I am addressing the situation where you have the rig that could do it, but you haven't fitted it out to do so, and are missing out for no good reason. Money is always an issue in these uncertain times too.
It is true about weight issues affecting what you can do. We are lucky (make that highly skilled!) in choosing gas over Diesel for the truck so we are not hauling that heavy engine and tranny around instead of being able to handle lots of pin weight.
Then we have a 5er instead of a TT so we can stash all kinds of stuff up front where there is lots of room (unlike the real estate available on a TT's tongue) and we don't care how much it weighs either. And who cares about a 40 lb solar panel when you don't care about 500lbs of water? (We don't have to travel with empty tanks to save weight)
I agree that if your rig can't do it, then you can't do it. That's why people buy different rigs and often change from one type of rig to another after trying out the first one.
