Hi,
Any one who claims solar is expensive hasn't run the numbers. Solar is a one time cost. A generator eats your lunch forever, is noisy, requires maintenance, and some day in the future, replacement.
In my previous RV I had only 30 watts of solar--but two group 29 Marine batteries. I ran my hot plate, waffle iron and coffee maker from them. I did have a generator at that time--but it was for running the block heater so the RV (a diesel) would start at -30 C temperatures. I was pretty much only doing weekend trips back then--but the 30 watts of solar would top off the batteries between trips.
On my new RV I went with a large battery bank--so that I'd not have to worry about hauling a generator over to the storage yard, and to maintain the batteries between trips. None of my battery charging has been done specifically by generator, though I do "opportunity" charging, if running the air conditioner.
