I had a similar situation this past week. After getting a late start due to a fuel tank issue, I missed my gps' recurring convoluted directions driving through Nevada City. I ended up on hwy20 instead of hwy49. When I realized, the gps had rerouted and gave me directions that were only minutes longer than staying on 49. I checked the route and verified it took me to the campground. So off I went.
After going through a small town, I headed up a mountain road and then down the other side about 30 miles total. Then the road started getting pretty washboard, etc. Then there were rocks. Then it became a really rough road, but I was within an hour to the campground. After going by Bowman Lake and Jackson Meadows, I was told to turn onto the unpaved road. I did. Only 30 minutes left. Then that unpaved road turned into a trail and got narrower and narrower. I decided right then to turn around and a couple minutes later found a spot to do so.
At that point, the gps said "in 4 miles go off road". It never gave me an alternative route. I got turned around and found a site to park overnight. There was a truck and large 5er nearby so I knew there had to be an easier way. The next morning a worker on a grader came through and I got directions from him. 1.5 miles back was a paved road that took me straight to hwy89. I put in Sierraville in the gps. The entire drive, that gps kept telling me to turn onto every dirt road I passed rather than continuing on the paved road on a direct route to Sierraville.
Like profdant139, it did not get me upset and made for a great story. But from now on, I will just turn around rather that trusting a gps re-route.
Got to my campground the next morning and had a nice if cold day before the rain started for the rest of my stay. But I wasn't at work.
And I found a new place to camp and know the easy way to get there.
If you were the 5er at Milton Reservoir this past week, I was your neighbor for a night.
