Not GPS but similar. Back in the early 50's Dad and Uncle were slumming around Northern Michigan in an old 4-door beater freshly painted with a brush. It was dark, the headlights weren't doing a very good job and the 2-track they were on kept getting worse and worse. After a particularly brutal jounce over something unseen in the road they decided to just call it a night right there, one sleeping across the front seat the other across the rear.
Sometime in the wee-hours they are woken by a persistant rumbling and a wagging light flashing through the trees, both of which kept getting louder and closer respectively. The one in the front reached over his head, opened the door and felt around on the ground in the dark.

They both bailed out at the last minute.
Fortunately they were on the siding and the train was on the main. . .
