My experience so far.... I have been happy with Dish. Started out with the tailgater, which gets HD/SD, but can only feed one TV in HD. Other TV will be SD. SD quite frankly stinks, no matter how big the TV. Also, I found channel surfing annoying with the tailgater since it is often moving around to find satellites when changing channels. And it is also a smaller dish (about 8 inches vs 18 inches for the tripod.) Seems to make a difference in how easily the signal gets lost; much less frequently with the tripod.
So I "upgraded" to a tripod dish, that comes with a 50 foot cable. The tripod dish can feed up to 3 tv's, all in HD. I ran one feed to the directly to the living area and another feed directly to the bedroom. I don't trust the internal wiring to be a ggod quality so as not to lose signal along the run.
I have two 211z receivers; one for each tv, so each tv can watch different channels.
The nice thing about the tailgater was that it found the satellites all by itself.
It can be a pain to aim the tripod dish by yourself, but with a helper and satellite finder and a little patience, no big deal.
I plan to get an external hard drive for one of them so I can turn it into a DVR. (there is a one time $40 fee to activate it)
As far as the locals, all you have to do is call Dish and tell them your current zip code and they will activate the locals for that area. I don't know this to be fact, but it seems you could give them any zip code and get whatever locals you want. I haven't tried it yet :)
Hope this helps.
