The easiest way to get the "local" channels wherever you are isn't to change your Dish service area (although it isn't a bad idea); it's to connect an Over The Air (OTA) antenna to your Dish receiver. Then, you can scan for local channels, and their programs will appear in your Programming Guide (after a few minutes delay) -- and you can record their programs on your attached Hard Disc in DVR mode, the same way you can record the Dish satellite programs.
That's how we create our program-a-palooza! We can record 1 satellite and 1 OTA program, and watch another OTA channel or a previously recorded program at the same time we're recording.
Most OTA antennas have a power supply plate with the "magic" button to choose between Park Cable TV and OTA Antenna TV. If you look carefully at the back of that plate, there's usually a 2nd output connector that can be fed to the RF input on the Dish receiver.
