The Mennonites around my area have big propane freezers and fridges without 12V (unless it is built in somehow not obvious?). You might investigate what they or some of the Amish use.
Out of curiosity I dug around and found this web site that sells all manner of propane refrigeration:
Lehman's
The brochure for the Diamond brand shows no input or location for a control board, so it doesn't appear to need 12V. But it does use 9V batteries for the LED interior lights.
