It is measured about 4 inches above the flame and right next to the 2 120 elements. Doug

This is MORE than just a fire prevention issue. High boiler temperatures, even for a short time leads to precipitation of the sodium chromate. This is a cumulative issue, rarely going from completely open to totally clogged with one incident. The more times and the longer the cooling unit is overheated, the more clogged it gets.

So, in addition to fire prevention, this will keep the cooling unit performing to peak efficiency. For every post about a fire caused by a cooling unit, we see many, many about diminished performance. THIS is why I would fit one.

Joraz, is there an issue with your fridge that makes you think you may have a problem after nearly 20 years?

Did you have to remove the refrigerator to install the APR unit?

As said, no removal. The unit has a temp sensor. You access the interior of the chimney by removing the access plate and snap the sensor right on the stack. Then you wire the circuit board to a relay and the relay to your control board. When the frig overheats the relay turns it off. Pretty neat. If you have any problems installing, PM me or give the company a call.

I think I will do as suggested and get one of those halon devices too.

Did you have to remove the refrigerator to install the APR unit? I am a victim of a Dometic fridge fire a couple of years ago and am interested in this device. My fridge was was only 5 years old. If I would not have been there at the time, it would have burned my rig to the ground.

The answer really depends on how diligent you are about turning off the refrigerator if out of level for more than a few minutes.

This thing with its temp display will likely make me a believer. I've always been pretty cavalier about leveling. Never really worried about it. Probably just been lucky!

Mine is on order!

I don't have leveling jacks and it is a pain in the neck to have to drive around in circles in a parking lot trying to get level enough.

I can ill afford a new Fridge.

You will have to decide if you want/need this to be "automatic" or whether you want to be responsible for turning the unit off and back on.

The other place I suspect we all overheat our cooling units if left on is on those long steady grades. Not rolling hills, as the cooling solution can still circulate, but on those several mile 4-5% grades you run into out west-- thinking about the climb we did from Mojave into Bakersfield this summer on our way west.
