Atwood GCH10A3E WH very loud

I don't have any way of measuring the sound of the water heater burner but that bugger is loud both inside and outside. It is louder inside and out than the Onan, it sounds like a jet plane taking off.

Is this normal with the Gas/Electric/Engine Coolant Atwood heaters?

  • My Suburban is definitely louder at 3am than during the day, it sounds like a jet engine or something.

It's even louder at 3am. Engine coolant??

    Yes engine coolant...

Has a 1/2" heat transfer tube on backside of water heater tank that has engine coolant flowing thru it ......hot coolant transfers heat to tank which heats water while in transit.
    Can heat water to 130*F

    LOUD.....
    Atwood uses a 10,000btu burner.
    Excess air causes loud flame.

As suggested....make adjustment to the air shutter opening.
Close it off until yellow flame then open back up just until yellow flame turns blue

Suburban uses a 12,000btu burner and NO air shutter. THEY ARE LOUD.
  • Generally, Atwoods shouldn't be too loud. I close the air shutter until the flame gets yellow, then open it up until it *just* starts to roar. Closing the door will usually quiet it down then.

    Suburban models do roar.
