Usually an ugly flame just means that the burner tube or something in that area needs to be cleaned or reset in the proper position. There's generally no adjustment as such for the air/gas mixture on the stove burners, at least that I have ever seen...nor is one really needed.
If the top (the part you hinged up) is warped or bent or mispositioned such that it impinges on the flow of gas from the burner proper that could also cause an ugly flame, and the solution in that case is obvious.
