My Propane tank is small and we did some dry camping a few weeks ago in the cold. My generator is Propane and we really didn't have any problems. But it got me to thinking (ouch) and I was wondering should my propane run out is there a way I can use one of those 5lb tanks as a back up? That way should propane run out in the middle of the night I will have a back-up? Just wondering..Thanks

We have the extend stay and would not be without it. The main tank holds about 18 gallon give or take. I hate when we're camped like now to have to pack up and move every time we need propane. I have a 30# we hook when we plan on staying for a while and if need we use the grills 20# while I get the 30# filled. Right now with day temperatures below freezing it's about every 6 days to refill the 30#. We're waiting for the wife to finish up her Chemo treatments which will be just before Christmas before we can head south to our Daughters in KY for Christmas and with God's blessing the DW will be in remission again.

You can use the extended stay for sure and then you always have a back up.

With a propane generator the answer is .... I don't know. Question: On your propane tank, IS there ONE HOSE that feeds both the "House" (Furnace, Water heater, Stove) and the Generator? IF so, then yes.Or is there a 2nd hose/line for the Generator only \? If so, then you can provide external Propane to the house, but the generator can not use it.NOTE: if you are unsure about hoses.. Try shut off valves. Same answer, If there is one, good, if there are two, NO. Larger generators generally suck LIQUID propane.. The Extend-a-stay type devices work on GAS (Vapor) only.
