One way around the big price jump in inverters could be to use modular units, if they can be made to work.
You buy the biggest normal inverter that is at a reasonable price point, then add one or more smaller units which are designed to add their output to power on a power line, in theory creating more total AC power.
They are designed to add power into a real AC line. They might add power to a good inverter output.
Same idea as paralleling gensets for more output.
I have not found anyone who has done this though.
I do believe in a post though someone was able to parallel a high end inverter with a genset if I remember the thread from a few months back. That is essentially the same thing for an inverter genset.
