Ball mounts Is it legal to have one when not towing?

Some time ago there was quite the thread about whether is it legal or not to have a ball mount in a TV when no trailer is attached. Came across answer today when looking for other stuff. I suppose answer is good for WA state only?

Question: Is it legal to have a removable ball mount and ball installed on a trailer hitch when not pulling a trailer?
A: Yes.
“I can’t find anything that says it has to be removed when not in use,” State Patrol Trooper Christina Martin said in response.
However, if the ball interferes with the visibility of the vehicle license that could be a violation and the ball should be removed, Martin clarified Tuesday.

P.S. I don't simply because when we broke down on fwy, trooper wouldn't push us due to damage to patrol car radiators, (dept SOP)finally found key to lock and removed ball mount, so he pushed us off fwy. And general info, he pushed us off because of no shoulder and tow away zone, so we were "traffic hazard".

keep the key on your key ring so you can find it next time.
  • It seems from a search done when the original thread was fresh is that some states/municipalities tried to ban them when not towing due to complaints from people hitting them in parking lots because they couldn't see them. For example a car would pull in behind yours and not notice it before pulling into the spot and then not being able to see it because their hood blocked the view. None of these ever passed.
  • When not towing with my F-350, I put in the largest, meanest pintle hitch that I can find. It has saved my bumper a few times on 3 different trucks.
  • The only thing that I have found that vaguely addressed that is the 'interference with visibility of license plate'.
Course that was when I lived in So. Cal. and CHP's used as an excuse to pull over vehicles......license plate frames was another one.

I hate them sticking out on my truck or anyone else....shin knockers.

Don't like the locking pins either......always a pain to get them unlocked. Dirt, mud, grime in key way...rust etc.
So I always use a standard pin and just remove when not needed......get stolen otherwise.
  • I have NEVER heard about it being illegal anywhere. This is a new one.
