Batteries

Things that make you go "Hmmmm?" about batteries.

Tesla Motors (TSLA) is set to announce a new product today...but it's not a car. Speculation is CEO Elon Musk will unveil batteries for homes and businesses that are more advanced than what's currently on the market.

  • Don't know the exact specs of an electric car battery but the Leaf has 24Kwh. Pianotuna may be on to something. I guess Tesla is more about form with the cute wall hanging aspect of the Powerwall.

So what is 5 to 8.5 amps at 350-450v convert to?

-4F would be a issue here unless I used the solar and Powerwall to keep it warm enough. 110F is close to not being high enough for the summer here.

The smaller version is the same size as the larger. Could go a lot smaller for our needs.
About 2kw as stated. So by the numbers only, that's about 5 hours not counting inverter, cable, thermal, etc. losses

  • Watching the Tesla presentation they introduced the powerwall, a 10 KWh battery that hangs on the wall and cost $3500. It can be ordered now and is expected to ship in 3 or 4 months. It is suppose to have all the needed safty features in the battery.

$3500 is a lot for a RV battery but it is smaller than you would think for that capacity.

There is also the Power pack. A 1 GWh battery that can be stacked. No prices, etc.
  • Power wall--10 Kwh for $3500. That is actually a practical price and features for some. Shipping will start in two-three months. I see that the nominal current is only 5 A and peak, 8.5 A for a single module. That almost assures that anyone using these will need multiples.
  • I could easily see this as an option in a higher end Class A.
Adding an interface to charge with solar can't be that hard.
  • Hi Niner,

I'd be very interested in a used leaf or other electric car battery. There would be plenty of "juice" left for running an RV.
