Battery hints/tips

Awhile back I recall seeing a topic on battery maintenance.... including things such as additives, mineral oil use, automatic watering setups, etc. I did a search and can't seem to find it.
We just got a new MH and I want to see what some thoughts are on proper maintnenace and tips for flooded batteries to keep them going as long as possible.

x2 and really depends on your specific use profile, so you could get a lot of different opinions on this depending on what others think your needs are. For example if you have the typical 4 6volt house battery with dual 12 volt starting batteries and the coach sits in unpowered storage a lot then:

100 watt solar panel with a morningstar sunsaver duo controller will keep both your house and starting batteries in tip top condition all the time. Costs about $150 for the panel, $100 for the controller and $50 in wire/stuff. $300 and you have a hands off fully automatic battery maintence system that will keep the batteries good for years (like 8 to 10 for most people)
  • A lot of that sort of thing is just snake oil and old wives' tales.

If you really care, then please specify whether you will be on shore power all/most of the time or off grid recharging by solar and/or gen-charger most of the time. It is all "situational" what works best.

  • Check out the June, 2013, issue of MotorHome magazine. It has a detailed article on battery maintenance.
