Battery maintainer question

I currently have an inexpensive Schumacher 1.5 amp battery maintainer (very similar to this unit: Amazon.com LINK. We just bought our popup and it hasn't been used this year, so I pulled the battery and hooked it up to the maintainer. Everything seems to be working fine.

Then I started doing research. It's a vice of mine. Some reviews of the Schumacher said it's not a true "float" mode. Essentially, it slightly discharges the battery and recharges it repeatedly, which will shorten the battery's life. That reviewer said for a deep cycle battery, they recommended the BatteryTender Plus (Amazon.com LINK).

The BatteryTender looks nice, but is it needed? It's a lot more money. . . .but still cheaper than a new battery. Will the Schumacher eventually wear down my battery prematurely? Am I worrying about nothing?

Thanks for any insight or experience you can provide.

P.S. I did a search and found this thread: RV.net LINK, but it didn't conclusively answer my question.

  • Ha!

If my wife had access to my profile, she'd add "Chronic Overthinker" to my bio.

I'll see if the BatteryTender Jr. is different from the one I've got.
  • I think you are obsessing over, to quote "Fat Bob" Lau, "fly poop in the pepper". I always have and still do use Battery Tender Jrs on everything I own. The .75A they put out has always been enough to maintain my batteries. You can purchase them online for $20.00 plus shipping. Having proven that maintaining batteries does not have to be expensive I am sure your current charger is just fine and completely paid for.
