Battery replacement

I think it is a good idea, however you will hear some say that with 2 6's and one goes bad you have no power but with 2 12's and one goes bad you still have power. I think the risk of the later is not very high, especially if you start off with 2 NEW 6's.

Do you do a lot of dry camping? True deep cycle batteries are very rare in 12V configuration. 6V golf cart batteries are true deep cycle and will survive better being discharged. So basic answer is, yes a pair of 6V golf cart batteries are a good idea. But not until you answer my question first.
Remember, two 6V golf cart batteries in series are nothing more than one giant 12V battery.

I did the same thing and went with a pair of 6 volt golfcart batteries from Samsclub to replace the pair of 12 volt batteries that came with our TT. Definitely a good idea for us as we do lots of RVing without hookups and they tolerate deep discharging better. We found wiring them in series is no more difficult than wiring them in parallel, last set lasted 7 years and still had life in them.

As others have already pointed out, two GC2 type six volts batteries are superior to two 12V batteries in almost all aspects -- except price. They are pretty much the industry standard in the motorhome industry. Travel trailer systems are no different. I suggest you go with GC2 six volt batteries.

Wiring batteries

Left side --- Two 6V in SERIES for 12V
Right side -- Two 12V in PARALLEL for 12V



For 2 batteries
Series......doubles the voltage but amp hour remains same
Parallel....voltage remains the same but amp hour doubles

6V 200ah......12V but still 200ah
12v 100ah.....12v but now 200ah

So get high amp hour rated 6v batteries

Not true. :W With dual 12 volts one can choose to run them in parallel together or sequentially, drawing one down to ~ 50% capacity then switching to the second whereas dual 6 volts both have to be in service all the time to be useful. Secondly, 12 volt jugs generally have less internal resistance than six volts and as a result tend to suffer less voltage drop under heavy load from an inverter than do 6 volts. If there's any notable advantage to 6 volt batteries it's in size because they typically have a footprint similar to a G24 12 volt but are taller, often making them easier to install in a tight location where a pair of G31 12 volts just won't fit. It isn't just price alone that dictates the difference, many do prefer to run dual G31 12 volt batts which are similar in capacity to a pair of 6 volt GC2s. :R

The cost difference is small and the 6v batteries are legitimate deep cycle batteries. (most 12v are not true deep cycle batteries regardless of what the label says).

It's simple to set up and as long as the 6v batteries fit in the existing battery boxes, would highly recommend the switch.
