Battery Terminal Corrosion

The more batteries you have, the more terminals/connectors you have, and greater issues with connector corrosion. As an example:
Lots of terminals

  • Terminal corrosion is due to battery gassing and doesn't have anything to do with the number of connecting items. If you keep your batteries cleaned and terminals coated you should have a minimum of corrosion. Don't let them get low on water and top off only when they are fully charged.

Turns out I've got some of that around here. Guess I'll clean the battery terminals, case and ground, and apply it.

Was wondering what else it was good for. First got it to seal around the rubber covers of my stab jack motors. That was after one of the motors filled with water and froze up on me.
  • I had a battery on my Excursion that was prone to corrosion. I didn't know it until I replaced the battery, but the ground connectors had corroded to almost nothing. I believe that caused a bad ground condition that caused misfires of the COP. I replaced the connectors.

My thinking exactly. On my list of upgrades when funding permits.

(Also keeps batteries warmer and at higher capacity when camping in the cold)
  • I only have 16 terminals, 8 on the batteries, 8 on interconnects. I inspected them this fall, after about 2 years in service, and not a single sign of corrosion.

How much neglect needs to take place for corrosion to set in? My batteries are sealed AGM and kept inside the living quarters of the trailer, so that probably helps.
  • True, interesting article. Not many people would do what he did though.
