If effort was put into stack scrubber technology coal would be a most viable source of electricity. The problem is taxes. The tax and spenadaholics refuse to grant tax free or tax exempt status to non-pet industries.
Nevada placed a titanic coal generating plant where stack emissions tend to acidify downwind terrain. Sounds bad until the fact that downwind terrain is alkali. Very slowly but surely high Ph wasteland is losing its alkalinity.
