actually several companies are using technologies that significantly improve thermal efficiency of gasoline engines. Both atkinson and miller cycle 4 stroke engines are signficantly more thermally efficient than a conventional otto cycle 4 stroke. Downside is very poor low rpm torque, but when coupled with an electric motor that is mitigated. Most or all the hybrids are using either miller or atkinson cycle engines. These engines can approach the thermal efficiency of a diesel engine.
