Going from off to on does cause more extreme thermal cycling on the system. Whether that's worse or not I don't know. I say for convenience, split the difference and leave it on during "camping season" and shut it off over the winter.
One downside to leaving it on: I found ours had faulted due to a power glitch and turned itself off. Only some condiments and drunks in there but oh did the thing stink!
