A local rebuilder told me they tend to have shorter lives if they are shut down frequently between trips. They believe the thermal stress causes cracks and they said the ones that last longest are the units that never get shut down.
So we leave ours on all season and I figure it only cost $5~7 a month to do so.
The heater and or gas burner is modulated. It turns on/off does not stay constant on. While the fridge is on it is CONSTANTLY being "shocked" by heat swings so I would have to say that there is very little truth to leaving it on as prolonging the life.
Remember the "local rebuilder" you are DEPENDING ON is DEPENDING ON FRIDGES BREAKING to keep their lively hood. Pretty good built in guaranteed "repeat customer" by advising to use it as much as possible.
Remember the old adage of when can you tell a salesman is lying?
Answer is when he opens their mouth.
Your "rebuilder" IS a "salesman" he is "selling" a service...
It is your money to gamble with, I am not a gambling man so I side on the conservative side that if it is not needed it is OFF.
