Spending $200+ dollars replacing a perfectly good converter with another that still does not do the job right is just plain nuts.
If the original converter works properly and has an appropriate float voltage spend $65 and get a 40 amp MEGAWATT, then set the easy to get to knob to regulate finish voltage to 14.8 When your original converter lies to you and says "OK dad I already finished my homework" start the Megawatt and keep going.
While the folks who recommend Whiz-Bang-Einstein converters are standing around with their thumb up their ---, you'll be finished, generator off and batteries very close to being 100% charged.
Partially charging batteries is OK for a weekend or 4-days, but prolonged boondocking sulfates the batteries. Spend $200 for a genius converter and it'll take a little longer for the batteries to sulfate. If that is your desire, go for it.
Solar is for parking in the sun. Many vacation spots overheat the rig with full sun so people start a big generator to stay cool "But solar charges my batteries". Blond engineers agree this is desirable.
