my answer failed to post a couple of times, but meter out the wires to frame ground. Low to 0 ohms "should" be ground/negative, whereas high to infinity "should" be positive.

edit - yep, chokes on the ohm symbol!


GK, sorry, another question, does the appliance need to be "switched on" for this test to work? The water pump for example has an inline switch. Lights obviously as well.
