Blue Tote repair help has split in seam

Need advise please, I have a 30 gal blue tote which I left on the back of my camper and did not leave lid off, which caused pressure to build up resulting in a split in the top seam about 8 or ten inches. I tried the flex seal across the split but it did not hold up. Does anyone know of something I could repair this with, hate to throw away and buy new one if at all possible.Any help would be much appreciated.

  • if it is under a year old, call Barker ans see if they will replace it. The did with my 42 gallon. It developed a crack near the front wheels mounting plate.
  • Hey folks, afraid I haven't been very active on the site lately (or at the campground either :(), but wanted to pass along this tip.

Had to repair the windshield washer reservoir on the 1500 HD recently. It is made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), a plasitc that is notoriously difficullt to bond to.

Researching the issue I found, 1) an epoxy formulated to bond to difficult materials: G-Flex and 2) a surface prep for HDPE: Flame Treatment

After practicing on a few samples cut from a milk jug, I solvent wiped, abraded and flame treated the cracked area (after stop drilling as suggested above) and reinforced the repair with a strip of cloth. Got a very good bond strength.

This will work on all HDPE objects I'd guess, which in our campers is a common material. For the tote, I'd reinforce with fiberglass.

    Good luck with it.
  • Drill the ends and suggested above. Then with an eighth inch diameter drill put a line of holes alongside BOTH sides of the split.

Buy a tube of GOOP it does not matter what it says on the tube all the same stuff.

FORCE the GOOP into the holes and along the split. Let it dry 24 hours. Apply a second coat. Make it THICK. Dry another 24 hours. Stick the neck of the GOOP tube right against the holes and right against the split.

Been there done that with the tote. My repair lasted eight years and I sold the tote that way.
  • First drill a 1/16 hole just beyond the ends of the split which will keep it from propagating. Can't help with actually fixing the split. Shows you have a good seal with the top on!
  • I had a crack on the top of ours. Tried some epoxy but I forget what kind of plastic the blue terd toters are made, the epoxy wouldn't adhere. So I used a piece of Eternabond. Worked good since there was no pressure on the top.
  • I recently bought a plastic welder. It can fix something like this easy. I bought mine to repair ATV fenders. It paid for itself on the first project... With all of the stuff we have made out of plastic nowadays, this is a very useful tool.
  • You are probably outta luck. Same thing happen to us and after calling company there is no fix for it because of how the seam is sealed at factory. I was thinking of some plastic weld but was told would not work. Guess it would not hurt to try but on the test would only use grey water. Lol! For obvious reasons...good luck.
