etrailer is just taking the easy way out to ensure the worst case situation is provided for. A heavily loaded trailer with 4 wheel braking may need all the braking capacity available. If your controller is set at anything other than the maximum setting, 10 gauge is probably overkill, but since the end user is only buying 1 wire roughly 20' long the added cost is minimal. Personally, any new wiring I add to a controller is at least the size of the controller pigtails but no lighter than 16 gauge.
