BRAKES ON FIFTHWHEEL

Have new brake controller(Prodigy) and new brakes on fiver. I feel I have very little trailer brakes. The guy who did brake job said he will adjust brakes once I took a trip. If I try to brake with the lever under controller, it hardly stops the rig. Does it sound like adjusting the new brakes on rig will do the trick? Was scary driving on highway with out good braking control of rig. Feels like on brakes are truck brakes stopping it.
  • Yes Adjusting the brakes should help. Our new fiver needed an adjustment bad. I figure the delivery of the unit seated them and I adjusted them and made a big difference. A new set of brakes would be the same, though I would think if they were adjusted properly when replaced they should work fairly effectively even though they were not wore in.
  • Have you adjusted the controller it may be on a lower setting which would reduce the amount of braking for the 5th wheel even using the manual lever.

Adjusting the brakes on the 5th wheel will make a difference if the brakes were improperly adjusted to begin with. Even with new brakes they should have been properly adjusted and you should be able feel the 5th wheel brakes come on when using the manual lever.

It sounds like either the brakes weren't properly adjusted or the controller is turned to too low of a setting.
