They do make a 80x8.5 with 3500 pounds axles if you ask them to.. I use it haul around BBQ equipment to compete in contests. The main reason it is so large is so that my team can use it to sleep in. When I was having the trailer built they wanted to put in 5200 but after explaining to them what it was going to be used for they stated I could get away with the 3500.
As for the empty weight I do not know what it weighs off the top of my head.
Ok, That makes sense now. It's probably around 4000 to 4500 empty so maybe 5500 loaded. It's a huge trailer but with minimum load as you are doing it should work. I pulled a 5000 lb TT with the truck bed at max axle weight.
I dont remember the years of production but GM trucks had some very poor braking characteristics years back. I remember people saying that they had to veer off the road to avoid hitting people in quick braking situations.
