You have to brake much harder when towing, you experience pedal fade, and you smell burning brakes when you stop. That is CLEAR indication that the trailer brakes are not working properly.
If you adjust the trailer brakes to be more aggressive, WHEN do they lock up?
Do they lock up when you use the manual slider?
Do they lock up when you push the brake pedal?
Can you tell if the brake controller is working when you press the pedal?
Maybe the brake controller is not receiving the signal from the brake pedal, and is not activating the trailer brakes during normal stopping.
First let me start by saying that I am not dismissing anyone's suggestions. I am not ruling out that the issue could be my brake controller but rather I am trying to give everyone as much information as I can.
I have the controller setup so that if I go up from 8.5 to 8.7 the wheels on the trailer begin to lockup. After changing the brake fluid this weekend I am going to take a look at adjusting the controller as has been recommended by so many people.
As for the smell of the brakes I only had the brake smell after arriving at my destination and not when I had stopped at lights.
