Breakaway Switch

Once a breakaway switch has been pulled can it be re-inserted or does it have to be replaced with a new switch. Mine goes back in only part way but not entirely back in. Thanks

  • Don't remember reading that on my Genisis controller. It may have said that but I don't remember reading it. so far so good. I recently replaced the lanyard with a coiled one so it doesn't get tangled on things any more.
  • When the instructions say damage MAY occur, it doesn't mean it ALWAYS will occur. You can get away with it 10 times in a row, and still may get bit on the 11th time.

As a warning, if you drive to the grocery store, you MAY be involved in a car wreck.
  • Tekonsha says don't do it and so does the instructions for the switch.

"4. WARNING. Disconnect trailer plug before testing breakaway unit. Failure to do so will result in severe damage to electronic brake control."

Apparently, it does not always fry it. But that's what the instructions say.

You are warned not to pull that with the 7-pin connected in case it fries your truck's brake controller.

Mine has been tangled a few times and pulled out. shoved it back in. Same controller for several years. No damage.
  • It may also fit in one way only and need to be rotated to the proper orientation before insertion.
  • Yes, it can be re-inserted.
I would suggest putting grease on the key so it doesn't weld it self or corrode inside the switch.

I pull mine out sometimes to check to see if it is working OK. The plunger has a key which means it only goes back in a certain way. It has to pushed real hard until you hear it snap in place.

Leaving it out will drain your battery rather fast. Each BRAKE MAGNET will be drawing 3AMPS EACH. If this is a two axle trailer that will relate to around 12AMPS of DC CURRENT. Battery will not do this very long before discharging down...

  • Could not find any information in my controller manual that discusses a problem with the emergency cable being pulled out. And I have pulled it when it caught on a piece in the bed of the truck. Brakes locked up and nothing happened to the controller.
