Broken pin on steps

Noticed my steps were getting springy and I looked underneath. And the shoulder bolt that goes from the bottom up thru the half round gear rack was broken off. Not sure how much trouble it will be to remove the broken threads. I am thinking the steps will have to be removed. Right now I need to figure out a way to manually keep the steps up for the trip home. Any thoughts?

  • When a rivet broke on my fifthwheel steps it made them springy and ready to collapse. To fix this I removed the steps (4 bolts) and put on a bolt and nut , epoxied the nut, painted the nut and bolt black, and put the stairs back on. That was 3 years ago and they are still solid.
  • 1. You cannot fix that LCI step. They welded the shoulder bolt nut to the top case of the step and the bolt is BROKEN off and the threads still in the bolt.
    2. LCI has discontinued their steps as of July 2015 and there are none left due to your exact problem. Most Motohome OEM's have been replacing the complete steps assbly for over 2 years due to this problem.
    3. LCI purchased Kwikee last year and are now producing Kwikee and selling them in place of the LCI step
    4. You will have a direct bolt match but you WILL have to change the door magnet as Kwikee uses a different normal open versus normal closed switch.
    5. I do not believe you can even find that shoulder bolt from LCI anymore. They used to sell them years ago before they started welding the nut to the case. Doug
  • Have done my bolt, motor and bushings. Lippert steps are a POS.
I was too cheap to replace with Kwiki yet but will next time as that bolt replacement is painful
  • Depending on the age a complete replacement may be a better option. I have changed my controller, motor, and one smaller shoulder bolt. I really wish I had just replaced the whole setup when the controller failed.
  • Anyhooooooo...

McMaster Carr in Santa fe Springs sells all kinds of bolts including grade eight. Shoulder bolts too.

Add a .com after the name and happy hunting.

I was just doing a little research and I have Lippert steps and I think they have been discontinued. And I can kind of see why. I should be able to remove the broken threads and replace the shoulder bolt, but it may not be worth it if it is going to keep breaking.

your better off replacing them its four bolts

  • when you get them in place
wrap them bungee cords, motorcycle tied downs, or rope
