Yes, I agree that if you know in advance where you are going, you can download the maps to whatever device, and then will have them when you are off-network. My problem is I rarely know in advance where we are going, and when we get lost, a stand-alone still knows where we are and sometimes will tell us how to get back. But, again, you still have to have access to the GPS satellites, and occasionally they can hide from you. BTW, we bought our first one after being out in the toad after dark, then could not find our way back to the campground. Lucky, we found a local cop running radar on a dark road, and even he did not know where the campground was. BUT, he did have a book of state-issued maps in his trunk, and we worked it out. Went out an bought a GPS the next day. Not to see where we were going, but how to get BACK!!!
