As I recall the majority of the posts I read in that thread, My own included, said "With a proper controller yes" some went on to explain why....
Of course I have not re-visited the thead since that is about the limit of what I have to say and others have covered it as well.
With a proper controller that's how it's done
Without a proper controller it very simply will not work. And yes, there is danger..
As to the idea of monitoring the voltage till it gets high enough and then disconnecting.. You gonna sit there and watch grass grow too? That won't work.
