Buying a converter on Amazon, Ebay, etc.

I bought one, and had some trouble with it. In the course of a long troubleshooting phone conversation, a manufacturer's tech support guy (SUPER nice, but asked me not to print his name) had some useful tips on purchasing.

This was for Progressive Dynamics, but I imagine it might apply to all brands of converter / charger.

He said they had been having some trouble with people selling bad units on Amazon and Ebay, and not honoring warranties. These are new units, and sometimes used ones, too. He suspects they just resell the bad units after people return them.

PD are keeping track of the names of the bad sellers. Before buying, it sounds like it would be a good idea to call the manufacturer and ask if they have heard of your seller.

Also, some sellers are removing the serial number stickers. So ask about that, for a photo, etc.

He said Amazon and Ebay are USUALLY helpful in getting your money back, but not always. So maybe pay with paypal or credit card company that has a good fraud department.

He recommended buying (new or reman) from http://mtechsusa.com. I haven't talked to them yet.

I hope this helps somebody :).

Apologies for the typo in the title (now fixed). The problems have been with NEW converters on Amazon and other sites (and also with some used ones).
  • I'll soon be swapping out our PD9245 for a PD9260. The 45 will become the supply side of a big UPS driving 2 paralleled marine batteries left over from the upgrade to 4 GC batteries.
  • The ONLY reason a "used" Converter would be offered for sale is because it was pulled when replaced because it was causing a problem. Very few people would replace a good power converter with a new or upgraded model and then sell on the Internet. There might be people that attempt to repair used converters and sell them, but as others pointed out, WHY buy used when NEW does not cost much more. Doug

Copy that. I think we paid $145 for our brand new PD9245c, delivered from Amazon.

Imagine that. I've never had good luck with ebay. Others do fine.
