Controller is switching to float when NEAR full, not 100% full. 5 AH out of 220 is 95%, so controller works as it should. If you think this prevents you from getting 100% by the evening, then get a better controller that would let you adjust Absorb time and voltage and/or disable Float temporarily.
Replacing the controller is in the plans. Still don't know why disconnecting the portable panel increases the controller output...
