Bypassing transfer switch

I need a little help, The generator transfer switch(no generator) was humming, a relay was stuck. I took the cover off an tapped it and the relay popped and quit humming. Now I want to bypass the switch all together. There are 3 wires running into the left side of the box to a relay and nothing from the point on.
Then there are 3 wires red, white, black running into the right side to another relay and the same color wires running out the other side.
Now my question is, the 3 wires going in on the right side need to be connected to the same color wires leaving the relay, is this right?
seems the 3 wires going in on the left side are coming from the generator compartment. This is a 50a fifth wheel. I have posted this on several forums with no answers yet
OR should I just hire an electrician to do this???
Thanks,
Cary

  • Thanks everyone, Based on the diagram on the lid of the box it seemed straight forward. You guys helped confirm this.
I hate to second guess myself, but I do sometimes.

  • I THINK you'll need some kind of junction box (nothing complicated) to make it "legal". Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Like smk said, use wire nuts. I wrap the bottom portion of the wire nut and wire with electrical tape.
  • Yes connect the cord Black, Red, White, Green with large wire nuts directly to the romex that heads to the breaker panel. Connect colors to same and you will be fine. You could remove the relays and use same box or get a new box. Metal box should be grounded with the ground wire. Generator prewire stuff can be capped off and tied out of the way.

Split bolt connectors might make a better splice. Need to wrap each with tape. Might be even better splice solutions... Local hardware store should have something.
  • mexicowanderer, I would like to do away with the transfer switch. never plan to install a generator.
    always on shore power.
also not able to post pictures now.
  • If you post some pictures and the model number of the switch these guys can probably help you.
